Gadsden County Sheriff's Office and others join the community to walk in the Relay for Life to help find a cure to cancer.
The 2006 Relay For Life to benefit the American Cancer Society met its goal last weekend when the event was held on the athletic field at Carter- Parramore Middle School. "Our total was $76,547.77 and we still have more teams to report," said teams' chairperson Rosalyn West-Smith. "I'm so happy we reached our goal and beyond. It was a good relay," she said. While the event was scheduled to last until noon Saturday, Smith said they called it quits around 9 a.m. when the rains came. More than 85 survivors walked the first lap to kick-off the relay. The top three teams were Gadsden County Sheriff's Office, $9,272.58; Gadsden Correctional Institution, $6, 560.61; and James A. Shanks Middle School, $5,207.30. Tallahassee Memorial Rockers came in first for the best campsite and Bradwell Enterprises came in first for the "Most Spirited". Gadsden Correctional Institution also won "Rookie Of the Year" given to the best team as a first time participant.
