The Gadsden County Correctional Facility is located on the Pat Thomas Parkway near Interstate 10. An average of 222 inmates
are housed at the facility during 2005 which was constructed to house only 150 inmates.
Some of the challenges we face at the jail include the ever increasing cost of medical
care and prescription medicines and the rising cost of food. The county is required
to provide medical care and food for inmates and these costs are constantly
increasing. As we face these climbing prices we have taken the initiative to reduce
the cost by finding vendors who provide the products we need without sacrificing
quality and compromising inmate health and welfare. As cost continue to rise, we
will continue to look for ways to become more efficient in providing these services.
Due to the serious overcrowded conditions at the jail, we have found it necessary to
take a proactive approach in an effort to reduce the number of habitual offenders.
We have developed two programs, Faith-Based Initiative and Education Behind Bars, that are working much better than we anticipated.
